In May of 1999, an F4 strength tornado hit Haysville and portions of south Wichita. During this event, a portable building used to house Chisholm’s production shop was destroyed, as well as other portions of the existing facility. It was decided by the school district that the shop would be replaced, but also it would be built as a tornado safer shelter that could be used by the entire school population during this sort of wind event. This portion of the building is constructed of precast concrete with precast wing wall protected doors.
